Hotel Du Pont Review: A Luxury Stay & Dining Guide in Wilmington, DE

There’s something special about a getaway that feels both indulgent and effortless. For us, the Hotel Du Pont is a staycation—a chance to immerse ourselves in luxury without venturing far from home.

Whether you’re a Delaware local or just visiting, this iconic hotel offers a timeless escape. It blends Gilded Age grandeur with modern comforts, where every detail invites you into a world of elegance, charm, and exceptional dining.

If unwinding means sipping cappuccinos at Le Cavalier, enjoying craft cocktails at The Green Room Bar & Lounge, or exploring nearby attractions like the Delaware Art Museum and Longwood Gardens, then Hotel Du Pont belongs on your list.

We just returned from a wonderful weekend here and are already planning our next visit.

The Hotel Du Pont – Wilmington, Delaware

Ranked #7 on TripAdvisor’s Most Stylish U.S. Hotels, this downtown Wilmington property isn’t just a place to stay—it’s an experience steeped in history, charm, and luxury.

Opened in 1913 after two years of construction, the 217-room Hotel Du Pont is a stunning testament to Gilded Age architecture, meticulously preserved to this day. Master French and Italian artisans crafted its European chandeliers, intricate hand-carved woodwork, and exquisite mosaic and terrazzo floors over a century ago.

At first glance, the hotel’s exterior appears understated, but stepping inside reveals its legacy.

While modern furniture now complements the space, the classic bones remain intact. Simply relaxing in the lobby, you’ll instantly feel enveloped by its rich history and timeless charm.

 💡 Pro Tip: If you’re driving in, I highly recommend their valet option. Yes, there are parking garages close by, but the convenience of the valet here can’t be beat.

Over the years, the hotel has hosted celebrities, dignitaries, and even royalty. Just a few include President Jimmy Carter, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Amelia Earhart, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Norman Rockwell, Reese Witherspoon, Whoopi Goldberg, Duke Ellington, Paul McCartney, and Warren Buffet. There are so many more. Legend has it that in 1955 Prince Rainier of Monaco negotiated for the hand of Grace Kelly in this very hotel.

Check in at the front desk here was genuinely friendly and a total breeze. If you have any questions about your stay or need recommendations this is the place to do it. While waiting for the elevator we noticed yet another whimsical vintage detail, an old original mail slot for letters. Absolutely adorable. 

While the hotel prides itself on preserving these types of unique architectural details, one thing has been changing here: the rooms. 

Guest Rooms & Suites at Hotel Du Pont

The rooms and suites are under renovation and will be completed in late 2025. We stayed in a newly refreshed King Suite, and from the moment we walked in, it felt like a retreat. It had a fresh neutral palette, with an updated style and modern amenities.

Think plush bedding, sumptuous bathrooms, and a sense of tranquility that makes it easy to forget the world outside. Our bed was incredibly comfortable and each morning I woke up seriously rejuvenated. In fact, one of the best things here that’s hard to find in a city hotel: quiet.

While we loved how airy and spacious our room was, all the closet space had me gushing. If you travel, you know it’s a rarity these days. The in-room safe made it easy to stow valuables while traveling light.

Rooms here also have spacious marble bathrooms with either separate spa-like waterfall showers or deep-soaking tubs. The extra deep soaking tub in our room was like a gift. After a long day, it felt like having the spa come to me. The refined terry robes hanging nearby were much appreciated afterward, and the complimentary slippers were a lovely cozy touch too.

For me, coffee and water are a must in a hotel room and the Hotel Du Pont had us set up with both. We loved the in-room coffee espresso machine with Lavazza pods for a morning pick-me-up and the complimentary bottled water was a simple convenience that’s truly appreciated. If you need extra water, your room also comes with a free, take-home refillable stainless steel water bottle. Conveniently, right outside in the hallways are filtered water dispensers so you’ll never go thirsty.

The sweetest welcome? A tin of the hotel’s signature chocolate-dipped macaroons waiting in our room. For anyone with a sweet tooth, this little indulgence goes a long way. And if cravings hit later, 24-hour room service has you covered.

Other amenities in the room included a flat-screen television, free WIFI and nightly turndown service. The in-room fridge is always a perk, especially if you tend to find yourself with leftovers after dinner like we do.

If you want to get a workout in, the gym here is amazing. As a guest you have unlimited access to their state of the art 24-hour fitness center on the 2nd floor of the hotel. Complete with Peloton bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, a variety of strength training machines, medicine balls, and free weights – there’s no workout you can’t do here.

The hotel regularly hosts special events including elegant afternoon teas, holiday brunches, and themed celebrations tied to both pop culture and local happenings. Upcoming events include Mother’s Day brunch on May 11, 2025 in their famous Gold Ballroom. Check their events page for the latest offerings during your stay.

For some indulgent but more Zen-like self-care, book a spa treatment or glow-up at the onsite Currie Spa & Salon instead.

Our favorite thing to do here though, is eat.

Where To Eat & Drink At Hotel Du Pont

Downtown Wilmington, DE has a vibrant culinary scene along Market Street, but what makes Hotel Du Pont special is that exceptional dining exists right on the property. Foodies will love that you don’t even have to leave the Hotel Du Pont’s premises for great dining and expertly crafted cocktails. Non-hotel guests are welcome too, making these venues local favorites.

Le Cavalier at the Green Room, the hotel’s signature brasserie, feels like a European vacation minus the jet lag. The meals are unhurried, indulgent, and altogether satisfying, with a wine list that might tempt even the most modest drinker into trying just one more glass. It’s also one of the region’s most famous dining rooms. For craft cocktails and small bites at night, The Green Room Bar & Lounge adjacent to the lobby should be on every cocktail enthusiast’s must-visit list.

Also onsite is DE.CO, a modern food hall concept that currently features a variety of 5 food vendors where you can sample and savor different styles of cuisine.

Le Cavalier, fondly known as “Le Cav,” is the crown jewel of the Hotel Du Pont, blending history, elegance, and a fresh, modern vibe. Formerly the iconic Green Room, this historic dining space—with its breathtaking ornate ceilings, rich wood paneling, and spectacular globe chandeliers—underwent a thoughtful renovation in 2020. The result? A perfect balance of old-world charm and contemporary sophistication, where soaring arched windows flood the space with light, plush gold velvet banquettes invite lingering conversations, and a sleek bar makes it one of the most striking and iconic dining spots in Wilmington.

The name “Le Cavalier,” meaning “The Horseman” in French, pays tribute to the Brandywine River Valley’s equestrian legacy—a nod visible in the restaurant’s carefully selected artwork, including a striking framed equestrian painting that greets guests as they enter.

Under the culinary leadership of Chef Partner Tyler Akin, it delivers a modern French brasserie menu inspired by the flavors of Provence, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Whether you stop by for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner, you’ll discover dishes that are beautifully presented and brimming with bold, fresh flavors.

Le Cav strikes the perfect balance between casual and sophisticated, making it ideal for a special occasion or a relaxed night out. You can also start your day here with breakfast or brunch—we opted for the latter and loved every bite.

We started brunch with the Parfait—a visual masterpiece served in an elegant silver coupe glass. Made with labneh, a thick and rich Levant-style yogurt with a touch of salt, it’s artfully topped with plump fresh raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, then crowned with candied almond dukkah. The toasted sesame and warm spices like coriander create a nutty contrast against the cool yogurt and lightly sweet berries—a refreshing start that’s both indulgent and light.

If you’re feeling meaty, the generously sized Le Cheeseburger is a cult classic—and for good reason. Two juicy patties made with a prime blend are topped with bacon, schmaltz aioli, and gherkin pickles on a buttery toasted brioche bun, served with either golden shoestring fries tucked into a metal cup or a fresh green salad. The burger practically demands to be photographed before you sink your teeth into what might be the ultimate burger experience.

The Lobster Roll is most likely set to become their next customer favorite. A pillowy toasted buttered roll cradles generous chunks of tender lobster meat dusted with fresh herbs. Each bite delivers pure, buttery decadence complemented by a bright side salad and refreshing lemon wedge. We were lucky enough to arrive just in time for their lobster delivery, and the kitchen was kind enough to prepare one on the fly. If you prefer, a cold Lobster Roll preparation with Duke’s Mayo and herbs is also available.

Beyond the regular menu offerings, Le Cavalier hosts special culinary events that showcase Delaware’s food scene. Chef Akin’s Delaware All-Star Chef Series debuts March 24th with James Beard nominee Chef Matt Kern (One Coastal, Fenwick Island). This sold-out inaugural dinner features a six-course menu blending coastal and French cuisines with Mid-Atlantic seafood focus. It’s the first of several chef collaborations planned for spring 2025, with more events coming soon.

The Hotel Du Pont offers complimentary coffee in the lobby each morning. But even if you’re not too hungry, do yourself a favor: order a fresh-brewed cappuccino and Le Cav’s Pastry Basket. It’s heavenly and comes with a house-baked flaky warm croissant, banana-chocolate bread, Danish, creamy butter, and house-made jam.

Savoring these treats while surrounded by the restaurant’s stunning architectural details creates a morning ritual we could easily get used to. It’s as if you landed in Paris, without leaving the property.

For an after dinner cocktail, we popped into The Green Room Bar & Lounge at Hotel Du Pont. It’s located in the hotel lobby across from the piano, before the entrance to Le Cav (no outdoor entrance). All are welcome here too, not just hotel guests.

We expected to grab a quick drink. But the bar’s chic, cozy ambience with low leather sofas, layers of velvet pillows, cozy throws and mood lighting enticed us to stay longer.

The bar features premium spirits, wines, beer, and appetizers, but cocktails developed by head bartender Alex Taylor are the true highlight. Crafted with house-made syrups, herbal infusions, and distinctive flavors, his creations showcase the global expertise he’s acquired through his travels—evident in both the menu and every meticulously prepared drink.

A must-try cocktail at The Green Room & Lounge is the “Kingston Town,” an amber spirit-forward libation. It’s dramatically prepared by torching aromatic woods and spices, capturing the smoke under a wooden dome before releasing a billowing cloud of fragrance when served.

Alex explains, it pays homage to Bob Marley, who reportedly worked at the Hotel du Pont during his time in Wilmington during the mid-1960s.

According to Taylor,

“It’s a Manhattan-riff with layers of flavored complexity as an homage to the positive vibrations shared by Marley.” 

The cocktail features Appleton Estate 8-year aged Jamaican rum, an amaro and sweet vermouth blend, apricot liqueur, and cardamom bitters, finished with a wood and spice smoke that “adds additional layers of flavor.“

“Bob Marley was truly a pillar of strength and resolution; ‘Kingston Town’ seeks to recreate those attributes,” Taylor added.

Travel Lightly, made with Campari, House Vermouth, and Amaro blended and shaken with hopped grapefruit bitters and topped with ginger beer was another favorite. A bite of the candied ginger garnish before each sip revealed a new profile of flavors.

The bar also has a menu for small bites. All the menus here change seasonally. The bar is open to the public so even if you’re not staying at the hotel, make a point visit. Open Monday through Thursday from 5 PM to 11 PM and Friday and Saturday until midnight.

I know “hidden gem” gets thrown around a lot, but this place truly is one. Go check it out while Alex is running the show!

DE.CO Food Hall: Culinary Convenience Steps from Your Room

When you’re not sure what you’re in the mood to eat, DE.CO is the perfect solution in downtown Wilmington. This modern food hall, conveniently located in the same building as Hotel Du Pont, offers a culinary tour with five food stalls under one roof plus a full-scale restaurant and bar—all accessible through either the Market Street entrance or directly from the hotel itself. And, there’s more on the way!

The Bardea Group (yes, the same acclaimed team behind Bardea Food & Drink) has established a significant presence here with Casa Nonna, their newest full-scale Italian restaurant, alongside Pizzeria Bardea and Bean by Bardea, their gourmet coffee counter. For those craving Mexican flavors, Taqueria El Chingon serves up authentic tacos, while Al Chu’s Sushi, a long-standing local favorite, offers fabulously fresh sashimi and rolls.

Start your day at Hotel Du Pont with a cappuccino and croissant from Bean by Bardea

Our first stop was Bean By Bardea. It’s DE.CO’s newest coffee bar serving rich and smooth freshly brewed Illy Coffee, espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes. You can also have your coffee made with creative house-made infused syrups. If you love caramel, try their signature Koji Caramel Cappuccino or latte, which delivers the traditional sweet nuttiness of caramel but with an unexpected umami punch that makes it uniquely delicious.

While the coffee alone is worth the visit, don’t miss the incredible freshly baked treats crafted by Bardea’s talented Head Pastry Chef Amanda Nichols. The Almond Croissants here are absolutely transcendent—crisp, delicate, and buttery, dusted with powdered sugar and slivered almonds for crunch. They’re everything you love about a classic buttery croissant made even better with the delicate richness of almond flavors and just the right amount of custardy almond cream on the inside.

We also couldn’t resist the mini Strawberry Cheesecake, with its rich, creamy filling and buttery graham cracker base that had just a hint of salt to balance the sweetness. The service at Bean by Bardea is warm and friendly, which somehow makes everything taste a little sweeter. Kate, in particular, deserves special recognition for crafting some of the best cappuccinos we’ve ever had!

With its friendly vibes, plenty of tables, abundant natural light, and open space, DE.CO is a great place to take a break, enjoy a variety of foods, or even get some work done while you eat.

Hours vary by vendor, so check before you go, but having this culinary playground connected to your hotel is one of the best perks of staying at Hotel Du Pont!

One of the newest additions to DE.CO food hall, Casa Nonna is a casually elegant full-service bar and restaurant honoring the Italian family recipes of James Beard-nominated Chef Antimo DiMeo‘s grandmothers. While featuring traditional Italian comfort foods like pizzas and pastas, the menu cleverly reimagines classic dishes with a contemporary twist. The comforting, nostalgic Italian flavors create a joyful dining experience where every bite deserves to be savored.

The space here is stylish yet comfortable, with gorgeous geometric tile floors, wood-paneled walls, and stylish globe pendant lamps creating just the right vibe. The black and white diamond pattern floor contrasted with striking wall tiles adds a modern touch to the traditional Italian feel. There’s also an open kitchen, so you can watch the team at work.

For appetizers, we started off strong with the Porchetta Rotolini. Sesame crusted rolls baked and twisted with tender layers of porchetta, broccoli rabe and sharp provolone, wrapped and plated with an utterly addicting long hot cream. The sauce was bold, a little spicy, and it should be on everything. Every bite was crunchy, creamy, and downright unforgettable.

The crispy Baked Clams stuffed with ‘nduja and leek soubise were a unique take on this seaside classic. The ‘nduja, a spicy and spreadable Calabrian salami spread added a kick while the leek soubise, a silky sauce traditionally made with onions, cream and butter added an unexpected mellow sweetness. Decadently briny, and brightened with a squeeze of lemon, if you love seafood this one is worth a try.

Ever think a Mozzarella Stick could be sophisticated? Order Casa Nonna’s. It’s a thick, gooey block of fried cheese elegantly topped with an eggplant parm-flavored mousse plated over a yellow tomato sauce for dipping. Like two dishes in one and bursting with flavor, this one is fun to eat, and so delicious. And the cheese pull: epic.

If you love handmade pasta and want comforting Italian classics, order from the “Nonna’s House” pasta section of the menu. For pasta with a modern kick, “Our House” options like the Pappardelle with truffle fontina cream, umami rich mushroom xo sauce, and tender short rib is the way to go.

We had to try Casa Nonna’s Mortadella Pizza. The dough—first fried then baked—creates an expertly charred and airy crust layered with creamy stracciatella, bright yellow tomatoes, and a sprinkle of crumbled pistachios. It was crispy, nutty, and satisfying. This is the only pizza on the menu that’s fried, but it’s so light you’d never know.

The Pork Osso Buco was amazing. Piccata-style with garlic, capers, and a bright, zesty finish, the pork was fall-apart tender and bursting with flavor. So, so good.

For dessert we couldn’t leave without a taste of both Tiramisu and Panna Cotta. The tiramisu was classic in all the best ways—creamy, light, and soaked in just the right amount of espresso, with delicate gold leaf adding a touch of elegance. With notes of citrus and enrobed in a ring of white chocolate, the panna cotta topped with dark and sweet Italian cherries was a perfect ending to our meal.

Casa Nonna is open 6 days a week for lunch (11-2:30), happy hour (4-7pm) and dinner (5-9), making it super convenient for hotel guests looking for delicious Italian cuisine without even leaving the building.

Just a five-minute walk down Market Street from Hotel Du Pont, Bardea Food & Drink is putting Wilmington’s culinary dining scene on the map. Since opening in 2018, Chef DiMeo and co-owner Scott Stein’s flagship restaurant has earned national recognition, multiple James Beard nominations, and most recently, a spot on USA TODAY’s 2025 Restaurants of the Year list.

Named after the Italian goddess of food and drink, Bardea blends Italian traditions with global influences in the most delicious ways imaginable. Their shareable plates concept encourages exploration—exactly as Stein explained to us: “The menu is designed how we love to eat when we go out.” This philosophy translates to a variety of snacks and smaller, satisfying portions that allow guests to enjoy multiple flavors and preparations during the meal.

The Chicken Parm Bao Buns alone are worth the visit—an Italian-Asian fusion masterpiece that somehow works even better than you’d imagine. Their house-made pasta dishes, like the decadent Linguine with scallop XO sauce and caviar, showcase why Bardea consistently gets rave reviews.

Despite the accolades, there’s zero pretension here. The vibe is warm and inviting, with knowledgeable servers who expertly guide you through the menu’s creative offerings. From artistic seafood presentations to decadent desserts (don’t miss the Olive Oil Cake), every dish tells a story of culinary craftsmanship.

Reservations are essential—this downtown hotspot fills quickly with locals and visitors alike.

While the Hotel Du Pont offers plenty to enjoy on-site, its central downtown location makes it convenient for exploring Wilmington’s cultural attractions and historic sites.

Beyond the hotel, Wilmington offers plenty of things to do, from the Brandywine Valley’s stunning gardens and museums to the vibrant Riverfront area. Whether you’re exploring local art galleries, or taking a scenic stroll, the Hotel Du Pont serves as the ideal home base for your adventures.
